KIRI-E - Traditional Japanese Art of Papercutting

Kiri-e is the ancient, traditional Japanese art of cutting out pictures from paper (kiri - to cut; e - picture).
Imported from China to Japan 1,400 years ago, the unique Japanese style quickly began to evolve independently.
Originally Kiri-e mainly served as decorations at shrines and temples and as stencils for dyeing kimono.
Over the course of time Kiri-e became an art of its own and was also used to decorate homes, for illustrations in classic Japanese books, for plays, special cards, and calendars.
Kiri-e art is also connected to the creation of anime and manga.
A unique style of Kiri-e is Senga, in which handmade washi papers are used.
Today, Kiri-e has been diversified by many artists.
Extraordinary efforts are being made to preserve and further develop the art.
It takes a lot of patience and self-discipline to express your sense of the world through a knife's edge.
The Association Kiri-e International is the only association related to the Japanese art of papercutting outside of Japan.
Over the years, the association has brought together students from several countries and successfully promoted the art of Kiri-e.
President is Ms.
Rina Papadopulu, who is also a founder of three Kiri-e schools in Bulgaria, Italy, and Poland.
The group exhibition shows works by Ms. Rina Papadopulu and twelve of her students.
Furthermore it features Senga art by Ms. Mayano Onodera and other Senga artists.
